City Jodhpur popularly known as "The Suncity" is one of the oldest city in the state of Rajasthan. This is the second largest city of Rajasthan & with the status of metropolitan city.
Though it is very close to the desert area of Barmer & Jaisalmer in the west, the city has greeneries & facilitated through good infrastructure facilities having ample supply of water & electricity.On account of its location & availability of better in-fractural facilities, industrial growth is noticeable in the city. It is centrally located & is one of the important cities of the state from industry point of view. A sizeable number of engineering industries have been set up in the city.
There are other industrial units engaged in manufacture of cement, industrial gases, textiles, derivatives of Gaur Gum, Chemicals, Plastics, electronics, electrical, mineral based, S.S. utensils etc. There are large number of handicraft units engaged in production of handicraft items. This city has a good reputation in the handicraft export for which the turn over per year is in hundreds million dollars. After handicrafts, tourism is the second largest industry of Jodhpur. The Indian Air Force, Indian Army & Border Security Force maintain training centers at Jodhpur. High Court of Judicature for Rajasthan has its permanent seating at this city.
Connectivity : It is well connected by Railways & also by Roads to almost every part of India. The city has direct Air link to Mumbai, Delhi & Jaipur. Superfast trains connect city to Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Allahabad, Agra, Gaya & Howrah. The direct express trains connect city to other major cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Secundarabad, Trivendrum, Nagpur, Lucknow, Puri, Guwahati, Kalka, Jammu, Bhopal & most of the towns of Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujrat & U.P. The national highway no. 65 & 112 also passes through the city.
Jodhpur has created conditions & environment over the years that helps it rise as Professional Education Hub in the state of Rajasthan. Now its also becoming a major education hub foe higher studies in India. The credit must go the city's peaceful environment & its culture. It won't be surprising if they start calling it Academic Capital' in future as it rises to have number of institutions for higher education apart from having various universities here. City has got four universities including National Law University (NLU). Apart, city has one Govt. Engg. College, which is the oldest Engg. College in the State of Rajasthan. It already has one medical college. There are many Engineering, Dental & pharmacy colleges in private sector.
